When you think about what makes a tag team great several thoughts come to mind. Winning titles across multiple promotions or across several continents usually guarantee stardom. For one reason or another, these 5 teams didn’t reach the heights they should have.

Stan Hansen/Bruiser Brody-This tag team created havoc wherever they went, whether it was the Caribbean or Japan. Teams like the Funks, Dos Caras and Mil Mascaras, the Bulldogs and Baba and Tsuruta felt their wrath. They won many tournaments in Japan. It’s a shame that they never made an impression in the US. Other than a few matches in WWWF around 1976 they never wrestled together in the major US promotion.

Terry Gordy/Steve Williams-Defeating the Steiners. Winning both the NWA and WCW tag team at the same time. (Beating the Steiners!) So why are they on this list? Because their reigns were so short. I’m sure it had to do with their commitments in Japan, but I would have loved to see them spend more time in the US, either in WCW or WWF.

Assassins-The Assassins won over 20 tag team titles in their career, 12 Georgia titles alone. But they were never considered to be the best team in the world. No world tag team title reigns in a 20+ year history. It’s hard to believe because they had a good reputation throughout the sport. Jim Ross called them “The greatest tag team that he ever saw”.

Kerry and Kevin Von Erich-The Cosmic Cowboys won the WCCW tag team titles several times. Why are they on my list? Teams like the Midnight Express and the Fantastics wrestled in World Class but never faced the CC. They also never left home. I would have loved to see them venture out to the WWE or WCW and challenge teams like the Road Warriors, the 4 Horseman or the Rock n Roll Express.

Big Van Vader/Bam Bam Bigleow-These two monsters teamed frequently in Japan, defeating Muta and Hase for the IWGP tag team titles and holding them for several months before dropping them to the Steiners. I could picture a scenario where they arrived in WCW looking for revenge. I’m not sure why they stopped teaming, but I think there was money to be made in the States.
