Grappling with Tragedy is a series of articles that deal with unfortunate, tragic incidents that have occurred throughout the history of professional wrestling. It is unlike the ‘Wrestling with Sin’ series that deals more with the seedier side of wrestling like arrests, murders and suicides. Grappling looks more at particular tragic incidents that have in some instances altered pro wrestling in some way.

Hanako Kurokawa was trained by Mio Shirai (WWE’s Iyo Sky’s sister) and made her wrestling debut under the ring name of ‘Asahi’ in 2017 at the age of 14. Her debut match was at the famous Korakuen Hall against Joshi legend Manami Toyota. In 2020, Asahi took time off away from the ring due to the global pandemic and balancing school and wrestling. She returned to wrestling full time in 2021 and left her promotion Ice Ribbon to join Actwres girl’Z.

Asahi’s last match took place on January 31st, 2024 in which she was victorious in a tag team match. The following day on February 1st….Asahi was tragically killed in a car crash.
